Muscle Imbalance Assessment
What to expect
A Muscle Imbalance Assessment is unique to you. Every body is different and the assessment is tailored to reach your goals.
We will have an in-depth chat about your history, lifestyle, any current pain or issues and specific goals you would like to achieve
During the assessment you will be asked to do a series of movements, which you will be clearly guided through.
We will look at the movement requirements of your activity and the movement quality whilst performing them.
The assessment will help us identify any ‘gaps’ in the movements. We will then design exercises specifically for you to correct these 'gaps' and guide you through these exercises in the session.
We will then film the exercises so you have them as a reference with instructions on how to complete them away from the session.
What is a Muscle Imbalance Assessment?
In order to move optimally we should move in 3 planes of motion. This will allow for the ideal blend of mobility and stability needed for optimal muscle loading and motor control to perform movements well, efficiently and enable us to generate power.
However due to lifestyles, old injuries, poor biomechanics and other factors, many of us often build up compensation patterns, overuse some areas of the body (dominant sides) and under use others, which overtime can cause us pain and dysfunction.
The Muscle Imbalance Assessment will look at whether you can perform the given task/movement you are wanting to perform with the required, mobility, stability and motor control needed.
We will then break down the task/movement into parts to see if you have the desired mobility, stability and motor control needed to perform each part of the task.
In doing so, we can start to identify if there are any “gaps” in the movement. Once these “gaps” have been established, we can start to design exercises to “fill” these gaps and begin to correct your movement mechanics.
What’s the difference to other assessments?
Fundamentally we are all different, we are built differently, we move differently. We should not be using a one size fits all approach to corrective exercises.
From the way your foot plants onto the floor, to what your shin angle is, to if your shin moves or doesn’t move, these are all factors considered during an assessment, as this is what will differentiate you from someone else. Exercises will be designed and tweaked personally for you and your goals
The Muscle Imbalance Assessment is based on fundamental principles and unarguable truths.
Forces such as Gravity act upon us and drive movement.
The laws of Physics dictate where our bones should move to.
Movement is in most part subconscious
Our muscles react to bone motions and lengthen to decelerate this motion and shorten through the stretch shortening cycle.
In order to load soft tissue optimally it needs to be lengthened in 3 planes of motion.
The assessment will be based on these and many more considerations.
